Whether you want to keep the likes of Google out of your business, are getting too much Spam or just prefer a nicer looking email address, personalized email is the way to go:
- Privacy & Security
Free email addresses from Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook etc. are great, but they come at the expense of your privacy. Did you know that these providers collect large amounts of data from you through your emails?
Your emails, in combination with cookies left on your computer, give the likes of Google a fingerprint of your activities that feeds into their advertising and surveillance architecture. Although Google’s official line is that they are no longer scanning your emails for targeted ads, the Wall Street Journal has managed to prove otherwise.
There is also mostly a lack of end-to-end encryption to make sure that no one can access the content of your emails, even the provider.
Free Email addresses are also more likely to be a target for hackers and viruses and could get hijacked to send out spam (or worse) to all your contacts, ruining your reputation.
And if you ever had trouble with lost emails on Gmail, then you know that it’s impossible to speak to an actual human being on the phone to get any support.
- Advertising
Besides the above mentioned risk of your meta data being sold to advertising agencies, most free email providers also display contextual advertising next to your emails, which can make reading your emails in a browser difficult and irritating.
At the time of writing this article, Yahoo is using 1/7 of your screen for adverts and flashing banners – if you have your screen size enlarged because of sight difficulties, it’s even worse.
- Spam
It’s estimated that 80% of all emails are now spam, costing the industry billions every year and contributing significantly to your carbon foot print. People are often surprised just how quickly they start getting spam on free Email accounts. Plus, the spam filter options, whitelist and blacklists are not always easy to find or manage and sometimes even restricted.
- Credibility for Businesses
If you are running a business, getting a personalized email is absolutely essential. Using an @gmail or @yahoo email address, just looks unprofessional and makes you look cheap or worse still, your email could be considered spam by your potential clients and go straight into their junk box.
- Nicer Email Address
Unless you set up your email address a very long time ago, chances are, you were unlikely to get the email address you really wanted, but more likely had to choose some random numbers next to your name (i.e. JoeBlogs67239@gmail.com) because your name was no longer available.
